How grade conversion works

Different countries — and different universities — report results on different scales, so conversion formulas translate between them. The most widely used CGPA-to-percentage formula multiplies by 9.5: a 3.6 CGPA becomes 34.2%. Going the other way, divide the percentage by 9.5.

Percentage = CGPA × 9.5   ·   CGPA = Percentage ÷ 9.5

These are linear approximations, not official transcripts. Universities and employers sometimes use their own formulas (×10 is common too), so always check which conversion your institution expects before submitting an application.

Worked example

A student with a 3.6 CGPA applying for an internship that asks for a percentage: 3.6 × 9.5 = 34.2%. Conversely, an 85% score converts to 85 ÷ 9.5 = 8.95 on a 10-point CGPA scale — handy when a form only accepts one format.

When conversion gets tricky

Conversions are estimates because grading scales aren't perfectly linear — the difference between an A and a B isn't the same "distance" everywhere. For official purposes (transcripts, credential evaluation), use your university's stated formula or a credential service, not a quick online conversion.

Frequently asked questions

Is CGPA × 9.5 the official formula?

It's the most widely used approximation, but not universal. Some universities use ×10 or their own tables — check your institution's official conversion before relying on it.

Can I convert letter grades to percentage?

Roughly: use the midpoint of the grade's typical range (B ≈ 83–86%). The final exam calculator's grade picker uses the same idea.

Why do two converters give different answers?

Different formulas (×9.5 vs ×10) and different rounding. For planning either is fine; for official documents use your school's formula.

Does this work for international scales?

For the German, Spanish, Italian and Swedish versions of this converter, switch languages above — each uses its own local conversion method.
